INTRODUCTION Each word in English belongs to one of the eight parts of speech. Each word is also either a content word or a function word. When we look at linguistic universals, we get convinced that words in any language have different forms, functions and meanings. Different schools of grammar present different classifications for the parts of speech. Traditional grammarians, for example, base designations on a word's meaning or signification.
